BETTER-B: Improving treatment and care for severe breathlessness

The European Lung Foundation is currently collaborating with an international team of experts to improve treatment of severe breathlessness among people affected by respiratory diseases, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease (ILD). Funded by the European Commission, the BETTER-B project will investigate current attitudes to breathlessness amongst health professionals and trial a new medicine for people who are severely affected by breathlessness.

Breathlessness is a debilitating and frightening symptom which has a huge impact on a person’s quality of life. It is estimated that breathlessness currently affects 15 million people in Europe, with this figure set to rise in the future.

A new website will provide the latest information on treatments for those affected by breathlessness and for doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and others caring for people with these conditions. The partners will also develop new guidelines for respiratory and palliative care specialists on how best to manage breathlessness.
